STATE BUDGET

Budget Basics – More In-Depth Information

Next Ten provides more in-depth state budget overview materials. In 2004, Next Ten created California Budget Basics, a presentation and accompanying memo. The California Budget Basics presentation was delivered to 14 audiences throughout California in 2004 (click here to see a list of events).

Next Ten's Budget Basics presentation and accompanying memo answer the following questions.

  • Where do revenues come from, where does spending go?
  • What are recent trends?
  • How did the state budget deficit occur?
  • How do we compare to other states?

This information can help you learn more before or after you take the California Budget Challenge.

California Budget Basics was prepared for Next Ten by Stephen Levy, Director of the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy. While the report has benefited from feedback from others, the final responsibility for all findings and conclusions belongs to Next Ten.

* Please note that the California Budget Basics memo, which was developed in Spring 2004, uses data from the 2003-04 state budget. The Budget Basics presentation was updated in the Fall 2004 with data from the 2004-05 state budget.
